The Power of His Word

Jesus Heals a Man Possessed

Talk, talk, and more talk! We live in a world these days where problems seemed to be solved by throwing words at them, and it doesn’t seem to be working. With all this noise, wouldn’t it be wonderful to hear a word these days that has real power?

One Sabbath Day in Capernaum Jesus went to church and He taught. The people were astonished at His words. It wasn’t just what He said, but it was the power that His words had upon their hearts. They seemed to emanate authority and believability; they moved the people to action.

Well, during His teaching, a man suddenly stood up and cried out, “… Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? … I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.” (Mark 1:24)

Jesus rebuked the man right there on the spot commanding, “…Hold thy peace, and come out of him.” (Mark 1:25)

To the astonishment of everyone present, the unclean spirit that was in the man threw him into violent convulsions, and then – came out of him. The man was unharmed. The people who were watching were amazed and spake among themselves, “… What a word is this? …” (Luke 4:36)

As those unusual services ended, the word of what had happened in church that day spread throughout the community. Jesus meanwhile went to Peter’s house. Upon entering, they asked Him to minister to Peter’s mother-in-law. She was sick of a great fever. He came, took her by the hand, spoke a word, and instantly she was healed. She arose from her sickbed and ministered to them.

Now that evening after sunset, another remarkable thing happened. All the city was gathered together at the door. They brought unto Him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils. Now even though Jesus may have wanted time alone with His friends, or perhaps sleep, He nonetheless welcomed them, and laid His hands on every one of them, and healed them!

By the power of His word, Matthew says, He took their infirmities and bore their sicknesses. (Matthew 8:17)

My friends, talk is not cheap when it’s Jesus talking. There was power in His word then, and there still is – both when He speaks it, and when it’s spoken by His
authorized servants.

With all the words we will hear today, I witness to you that it is His word that comforts most and causes change. Lord bless us first to find His word, and then listen!
